Email sent on 12/13/00 from Bill Mowery to NETMANAG:
Hi all,
I'm very pleased that we have such a raised level of consciousness
concerning network / data security these days. I know it's been an uphill
battle not only for me but also for those who have had to endure the
various attacks and intrusions over the last couple of years. My hope is
that we can take advantage of this critical mass of enthusiasm, desire, and
need to take our collective security efforts to a higher plateau.
In response to numerous requests we're preparing to make the firewall
status and configuration tools available to all network managers on a read
only basis. The process looks as follows:
* Each user must have an account to access the system.
* The firewall tools must be accessed from a fixed IP address.
* The GUI tools for access must be installed on a Windows-based machine.
If you would like access to these tools please send an email to
security@sc.edu with your user name ( the user name must be your SINGLE
USER NAME AS DEFINED TO THE AUTHENTICATION PROJECT) and the IP address from
which you will access the system. We will create your account and contact
you via phone to set your password ( yes, we will eventually handle this
via the authentication system when it is available for faculty and staff).
Once your account is created you will be able to download the required
tools via FTP for installation.
The GUI interface to the firewall is for the most part very intuitive, but
I can foresee many questions on interpreting the information. We should
probably plan to get together for a short training session on interpreting
the information once we have an installed user base.
Please email with your requests for access or any comments or concerns.
Best regards,
Bill
