Steve Wright, Ken Sallenger,
and Tobias Brasier - Linux as a Desktop Platform |
| |
Linux is a free, UNIX-like operating system which runs
on home PCs and a variety of platforms. Linux is
attractive because of its stability, efficient use of
resources, and a wide variety of free and commercial
application software. In recent years, great
improvements in graphical user interfaces (GUIs) make
Linux a more widely useful desktop platform. Two of the
most popular GUI systems are KDE and GNOME. Office
productivity applications are the software of interest
for many users. OpenOffice/StarOffice, KOffice, and the
family of GNOME applications provide all of the standard
tools one would expect. File compatibility with common
commercial applications remains an important
consideration. |
