Recent rash of systems being compromised all across campus,
mainly desktops and lab systems

Network managers should:

Check for user accounts with no passwords
§
Check for user administrator with no passwords

Registrar has warned that student data is not to be kept on
computers in departments, but only in the appropriate, official database
§
Some recent attacks have been of the fragmented packet type
§
Network scans have also been detected
§
IP redirects have been stopped by upgrading software on all
routers
§
Distributed firewalls are being considered for possible
future use
§
There was a general discussion of Kazaa/Morpheus, an ongoing
issue because it consumes extreme amounts of bandwidth whenever it breaks out

USC has been using a donated OC3 to connect to SCNet for the
last two years

That donation is about to expire
§
Computer Services began considering options about two months
ago
§
An OC12 Backbone SONET Ring is being planned to connect
Computer Services at 514 S Main St., the Hampton St. building and the Central
Office at 1701 Senate St., providing full redundancy, full SLA's, economy and
scalability
§
USC would be first state agency to use such service
